Regardless of our differences, members of the human race have certain things in common. We eat, we sleep, we wake up. The article series “Wake up with .. ” follows six very different people from the Danish island Fyn for the first two hours of their day examining the uniqueness of the ordinary.

St. Dannesbo, close to Odense, Denmark, is indispensable to many of Fyns homeless, addicts and mentally ill. Here, they receive help to get back on their feet, whether that help is rehabilitation, mental evaluation, housing or just a temporary roof over their heads. What encourages many to go here instead of other similar places in the area is that residents are allowed to use drugs or alcohol on the premises. This keeps people from slipping through the cracks of the system, because they’re not obliged to go cold turkey to get help. The loose policy on this subject creates an atmosphere of acceptance, of meeting people where they are.
St. Dannesbo is brimming with stories. Here are four of them.
